ABOUT THE GYM
Legions Gym was founded in January 2011 by Dave Phillips and Al Chambers with the aim of building a successful gym that is a great place to train for everyone. Over the past 8 years it’s fair to say that goal has been achieved and so, so much more……….
Legions gym is now a thriving community with a big team of active fighters, loads of trainers and hundreds of fitness enthusiasts who like train hard and laugh along the way. Classes are held in a relaxed but hard working environment and are open to all levels, male and female from beginners to active fighters.
Legions also plays a part in the wider community – putting on the highly successful “Night of the Legions” fight nights, and also Little Fighters which trains amateurs to take part in charity boxing matches – winning the Minster FM local heroes fund raiser of the year award!
Legions has a long-standing association with York’s Special Care Baby Unit and has to date raised over £100,000 for the unit with plenty more in the pipeline.

At its core Legions is a Thai Boxing gym. Muay Thai is a devastating striking art that blends techniques such as kicks, knees, elbows, punches and clinch work. Muay Thai (or Thai Boxing) is a fighting art that originated in Thailand over 1000 years ago. Often called the “toughest ring sport in the world” it is arguably the most powerful and dominating stand-up martial art in the world.
A good Muay Thai session is one of the best workouts a person can have and is perfect for fitness and weight loss as well as increasing confidence, physical ability and skill. All you need to bring in the first instance is a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, all gloves and equipment is available at the gym.
Advanced classes are taught by our head coach Dave “the boss man” Phillips and generally consist of a warm up, some pads or technical training followed by sparring.

Muay Thai & K1
Dave is the gyms head coach and in charge of the Thai fight team and training. He works the guys hard on the pads and in sparring. Legions fighters are renowned for their aggressive style and technical proficiency which stems from Dave’s own fighting style. Dave has taken complete novices and turned them into World Champions. Dave teaches the advanced Thai classes at the gym and is available for 1-2-1 training
Muay Thai, Boxing & Self Defence
Al has a role in a number of areas of the gym. He has experience in Muay Thai, Boxing and is qualified to teach Self Defense. He has relaxed, calm style of coaching and works with members who train for fun through to gyms fighters. Al teaches the self defense classes, kids Thai-boxing and is part of the boxing coaching team. He is also available for 1-2-1 sessions.
